Taxonomy
Squalus auriculatus was named by Blainville (1818).

It was recombined as Procarcharodon auriculatus by Case (1981); it was recombined as Carcharocles auriculatus by Long (1992); it was recombined as Carcharodon auriculatus by Agassiz (1843), Woodward (1889) and Applegate and Espinosa-Arrubarrena (1996).
