Taxonomy
Prionus was named by Geoffroy (1762). It is extant. It is the type genus of Prioninae, Prionini.
It was assigned to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1775); to Coleoptera by Geoffroy (1762) and Latreille (1796); to Prionii by Latreille (1802); to Cerambycidae by Piton (1940); and to Prionini by Bouchard et al. (2011).
