Taxonomy
Saurichthys mougeoti was named by Agassiz (1843).

It was synonymized subjectively with Saurichthys acuminatus by Woodward (1895); it was recombined as Birgeria mougeoti by Stensiö (1921) and Romano et al. (2017).
