Holocephalina was named by Salter (1864) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm uMid-l Cm uMid-m Sepkoski's reference number: 80,378]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Holocephalinidae.

It was assigned to Conocoryphidae by Resser (1936) and Yang et al. (1993); to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Holocephalinidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
