Haplodontheriidae was named by Ameghino (1907). Its type is Haplodontherium.

It was reranked as the subfamily Haplodontheriinae by Paula Couto (1956); it was synonymized subjectively with Toxodontinae by Nasis et al. (2000).

It was assigned to Toxodontia by Ameghino (1907); and to Toxodontidae by Paula Couto (1956).
