Thalattosauria was named by Merriam (1905). It was considered monophyletic by Nicholls (1999).

It was reranked as the suborder Thalattosauria by Nopcsa (1923) and Roxo (1937); it was reranked as the unranked clade Thalattosauria by Cheng et al. (2007).

It was assigned to Diaptosauria by Merriam (1905); to Pelycosauria by Nopcsa (1923); to Rhynchocephalia by Roxo (1937); to Lepidosauria by Kuhn (1966); to Diapsida by Nicholls and Brinkman (1993); to Thalattosauriformes by Nicholls (1999); to Reptilia by Kuhn (1946) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Diapsida by Carroll (1988) and Cheng et al. (2007).

Nicholls 1999It is diagnosed by the following synapomorphies—[1] supratemporal fenestra further reduced to a slit; [2 ] parietal flange absent; [ 3 ] supratemporal bone deep, extending anteriorly to meet frontal; [19] anterior tip of premaxilla recurved; [22] mandibular symphysis recurved; 1281 diastema between maxillary and premaxillary teeth.
