Iddingsia was named by Walcott (1924) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-u Cm Fran-l Sepkoski's reference number: 379]. Its type is Ptychoparia similis.

It was assigned to Dokimocephalidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002).
