Gyrinus dubius was named by Giebel (1856). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Lower Lias (Brodie coll), which is in a Rhaetian/Hettangian marine shale/limestone in the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Paragyrinus dubius by Handlirsch (1906) and Nel (1989).
