Gyrinus natans was named by Brodie (1845). It is an impression. Its type locality is Forthampton (Brodie collection), which is in a Rhaetian marine horizon in the Lilstock Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Xenogyrinus natans by Handlirsch (1906) and Nel (1989).
