Taxonomy
Onchus sulcatus was named by Agassiz (1837). It is the type species of Amelacanthus.

It was recombined as Ctenacanthus sulcatus by Woodward (1891); it was recombined as Amelacanthus sulcatus by Agassiz (1837) and Koot et al. (2013).
