Eoscarterellidae was named by Evans (1956). Its type is Eoscarterella.
It was synonymized subjectively with Dysmorphoptilidae by Shcherbakov (1984) and Lambkin (2016); it was reranked as the subfamily Eoscarterellinae by Szwedo and Huang (2019), Fu et al. (2021) and Nel et al. (2022).
It was assigned to Prosboloidea by Lara and Wang (2016); to Dysmorphoptiloidea by Hamilton (1992) and Szwedo (2018); and to Dysmorphoptilidae by Szwedo and Huang (2019), Fu et al. (2021) and Nel et al. (2022).
