Oertlispongus was named by Dumitrica et al. (1980) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi Tr Carn Sepkoski's reference number: 938]. Its type is Oertlispongus inaequispinosus. It is the type genus of Oertlispongidae.
It was assigned to Oertlispongidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
