Kingstonia was named by Walcott (1924). Its type is Kingstonia apion.

It was assigned to Corynexochidae by Resser (1936); to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Kingstoniidae by Westrop (1992) and Jell and Adrain (2002).
