Oxytelus was named by Gravenhorst (1802). It is extant. It is the type genus of Oxytelidae, Oxytelini.
It was assigned to Coleoptera by Gravenhorst (1802); to Staphylinidae by Scudder (1877), Scudder (1890) and Scudder (1900); and to Oxytelini by Herman (2001), Bouchard et al. (2011) and Cai et al. (2016).
