Taxonomy
Peralestes was named by Owen (1871).

It was synonymized subjectively with Spalacotherium by Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004).

It was assigned to Marsupialia by Owen (1871); to Symmetrodonta by Simpson (1925); and to Spalacotheriidae by Simpson (1928), Simpson (1929), Clemens (1963) and Cassiliano and Clemens (1979).
