Megapalaeolenus was named by Chang (1966) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto-u Sepkoski's reference number: 463]. It is not extant. Its type is Palaeolenus deprati.

It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeolenidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
