Calliax was named by de Saint Laurent (1973). It is extant.

It was assigned to Eucalliinae by Manning and Felder (1991) and Karasawa (1993); to Callianassidae by Dana (1852) and Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Eucalliacinae by Charbonnier et al. (2013).
