Lygaeus was named by Fabricius (1794). It is extant. It is the type genus of Lygaeidae, Lygaeinae.
It was assigned to Ryngota by Fabricius (1794); to Hemiptera by Latreille (1796); to Ryngota by Fabricius (1798); to Cimicides by Latreille (1802); to Lygaeidae by Scudder (1890), Förster (1891) and Theobald (1937); and to Lygaeinae by Péricart (2001).
