Taxonomy
Phyllolepidae was named by Woodward (1891). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Stensiö (1934), Stensio (1934) and Stensi (1934) and Stensio (1934).

It was assigned to Arthrodira by Woodward (1891) and Hay (1902); to Arthrothoraci by Jordan (1963); to Phyllolepina by Denison (1975) and Denison (1978); and to Phyllolepida by Stensiö (1934), Stensio (1934), Stensi (1934), Stensio (1934) and Goujet and Young (1995).
