Paenebeltella was named by Ross (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u Sepkoski's reference number: 795]. Its type is Paenebeltella vultulata.

It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hystricuridae by Jell and Adrain (2002) and Adrain et al. (2003).
