Taxonomy
Tipula carpenteri was named by Alexander (1938). Its type specimen is MCZ 4536, an exoskeleton (nearly complete fly), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Creede (MCZ collection), which is in an Oligocene crater lake shale in the Creede Formation of Colorado.
