Archaeoptilus was named by Scudder (1881). Its type is Archaeoptilus ingens. It is the type genus of Archaeoptilidae.
It was assigned to Palaeodictyoptera by Handlirsch (1919) and Bolton (1921); to Archaeoptilidae by Handlirsch (1906) and Handlirsch (1922); and to Palaeoptera by Carpenter (1992).
