Taxonomy
Bellerophon was named by de Montfort (1808) [Sepkoski's age data: O Ashg Tr Anis Sepkoski's reference number: 2,110,1130]. Its type is Bellerophon vasulites. It is the type genus of Bellerophontacea.

It was reranked as Carinaropsis (Bellerophon) by Sardeson (1892).

It was assigned to Carinaropsis by Sardeson (1892); to Bellerophontidae by McCoy (1852), Ulrich and Scofield (1897), Weir (1931) and Knight et al. (1960); to Bellerophontida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Bellerophontinae by Bouchet et al. (2005), Nützel and Ketwetsuriya (2016) and Ketwetsuriya et al. (2020).

J. Weir 1931Symmetrical, involute, globose orsubglobose shells, with or without umbilical depressions. Whorls rounded on the sides and dorsum, or subquadrate and carinate ; aperture not strongly expanded, with or without callosity on the inner lip. Sinus and band well developed ; the latter may be broad or narrow and filiform, convex or concave, situated on a prominent keel or in a shallow depression of the dorsum, and it may be limited by two strong revolving ribs (carinae). Sculpture consisting of concrescent lamellae of variable width.
