Archaeosemionotus was named by Deecke (1889). Its type is Archaeosemionotus connectens.

It was synonymized subjectively with Semionotus by de Alessandri (1910).

It was assigned to Semionotidae by Bürgin (1995) and Cartanyà (1999); and to Furidae by López-Arbarello et al. (2014).
