Protemnites was named by Whitehouse (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-u Sepkoski's reference number: 16]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); to Elviniidae by Jell and Adrain (2003); and to Pterocephaliidae by Paterson and Laurie (2004).
