Protopeltura was named by Broegger (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Fran-l Cm Trep-l Sepkoski's reference number: 81]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Pelturinae by Harrington and Leanza (1957); to Olenidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002).
