Cryptohypnus terrestris was named by Scudder (1879). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Nicola river, which is in a Ypresian lacustrine shale/siltstone in Canada.
It was recombined as Ligmargus terrestris by Stibick (1981) and Kundrata et al. (2021).
