Dendrocygninae was named by Reichenbach (1850). It is extant.

It was reranked as the tribe Dendrocygnini by Mlíkovsky and Svec (1986).

It was assigned to Anserinae by Mlíkovsky and Svec (1986); and to Anatidae by Lambrecht (1933), Brodkorb (1964), Livezey and Martin (1988), Emslie (1992), Dozo et al. (2010) and Zelenkov (2017).
