Ptychoparia was named by Corda (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm lMid Cm uMid Sepkoski's reference number: 464,472]. Its type is Conocephalites striatus.

It was assigned to Ptychopariinae by Henningsmoen (1952); to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ptychopariidae by Jell and Adrain (2003).
