Taxonomy
Thlaeodon was named by Cope (1892). Its type is Thlaeodon padanicus. It is the type genus of Thlaeodontidae.

It was assigned to Marsupialia by Cope (1892); to Stagodontidae by Hay (1902); to Didelphodontinae by Simpson (1927) and Simpson (1929); and to Thlaeodontinae by Hay (1930).
