Stegomosuchidae was named by Huene (1922). Its type is Stegomosuchus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Ornithosuchidae by Kuhn (1946).

It was assigned to Pseudosuchia by Huene (1922); to Ornithosuchoidea by Kuhn (1964); to Chirotherioidea by Kuhn (1966); and to Protosuchia by Walker (1970).
