Taxonomy

Cheiracanthus was named by Agassiz (1835).

It was assigned to Acanthodii by Owen (1859); to Acanthoessidae by Hay (1902) and Jordan (1963); and to Acanthodidae by Woodward (1891) and Denison (1979).
