Taxonomy
Ctenodus was named by Agassiz (1838) [Tooth plates irregularly ovate or elliptical in form. 6–23 approximately parallel tooth ridges. Tooth ridge angle less than 40. Pterygoid tooth plate concave, prearticular tooth plate convex.]. It is the type genus of Ctenodontidae.

It was reranked as Dipterus (Ctenodus) by Newberry (1889).

It was assigned to Dipterus by Newberry (1889); to Ctenodontidae by Hay (1902) and Miles (1977); to Ctenodontinae by Campbell and Barwick (1990); to Ctenodontiidae by Schultze (1993); to Ctenodontidae by Woodward (1891) and Schultze (2004); and to Dipnoi by Sharp and Clack (2013) and Smithson et al. (2016).
