Cenocimbex was named by Nel (2004). Its type is Cenocimbex menatensis. It is the type genus of Cenocimbicinae.

It was assigned to Cimbicinae by Nel (2004) and Taeger et al. (2010); and to Cenocimbicinae by Archibald and Rasnitsyn (2023).

Nel 2004Cimbicid wasp characterized by the combination of the following characters: labrum not greatly widened and/or elongate; head not greatly enlarged behind eyes; broad clypeus; first abdominal tergite with hind margin weakly emarginated; in fore wing, a short vein ‘a’ separating cells [lA] and [2A] in fore wing, in a rather distal position; vein 2r-m strongly curved in fore wing; pterostigma broad.
