Omalium was named by Gravenhorst (1802). It is extant. It is the type genus of Omaliinae, Omaliini.

It was assigned to Coleoptera by Gravenhorst (1802); to Staphylinidae by Wickham (1913); and to Omaliini by Herman (2001) and Bouchard et al. (2011).
