Sigmocheilus was named by Palmer (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-u Sepkoski's reference number: 489]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Pterocephaliidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pterocephaliinae by Hopkins (2011).
