Byrrhus was named by Linnaeus (1767). It is extant. It is the type genus of Byrrhoidea, Byrrhidae, Byrrhinae, Byrrhini, Byrrhii.
It was assigned to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1775); to Coleoptera by Linnaeus (1767), Müller (1776) and Latreille (1796); to Necrophagi by Latreille (1802); to Byrrhidae by Scudder (1900); and to Byrrhini by Bouchard et al. (2011) and Webster (2016).
