Meloe was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type genus of Meloidae, Meloinae, Meloini.
It was assigned to Coleoptera by Linnaeus (1758), Linnaeus (1761), Geoffroy (1762), Scopoli (1763), Müller (1764), Schaeffer (1766), Linnaeus (1767), Forster (1771), Müller (1776) and Latreille (1796); to Cantharidiae by Latreille (1802); and to Meloini by Bouchard et al. (2011) and Riccieri et al. (2022).
