Taxonomy
Sphenophorus was named by Schonherr (1837). It is extant. It is the type genus of Sphenophorini.

It was assigned to Edestidae by Jordan (1963); to Sphenophorini by Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Sphenophorina by Legalov (2015) and Chamorro et al. (2021).
