Selatosomus was named by Stephens (1830). It is extant. It is the type genus of Selatosomini.

It was assigned to Prosternini by Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Selatosomini by Schimmel et al. (2015), Kundrata et al. (2021) and Nabozhenko et al. (2024).
