Sphenophorini was named by Lacordaire (1865). It is extant. Its type is Sphenophorus.

It was reranked as the subtribe Sphenophorina by Legalov (2015) and Chamorro et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Rhynchophorinae by Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Rhynchophorini by Legalov (2015) and Chamorro et al. (2021).
