Rissoa was named by Fréminville (1814) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than R Sepkoski's reference number: 794]. It is extant. Its type is Rissoa semistriata.

It was reranked as Melania (Rissoa) by Deshayes (1825); it was misspelled as Rissoia by Bronn (1848), Dall (1896), Martin (1904), Gardner (1947), Gardner (1948), Weisbord (1962), Perrilliat (1972), Ward and Blackwelder (1987), Marquet (1997), Lozouet (1998), Sepkoski (2002) and Vera-Peláez et al. (2004).

It was assigned to Melania by Deshayes (1825); to Gastropoda by Bronn (1848) and Dall (1896); to Rissoinae by Marquet (1997); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Rissoidae by Martin (1904), Gardner (1947), Gardner (1948), Weisbord (1962), Perrilliat (1972), Ward and Blackwelder (1987), Lozouet (1998) and Vera-Peláez et al. (2004).
