Taxonomy
Lamna (Odontaspis) rhaphiodon was named by Agassiz (1843). Its type specimen is BMNH 4582-3, a set of teeth, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Scapanorhynchus rhaphiodon by Woodward (1889), Chapman (1918) and Applegate (1970); it was recombined as Lamna rhaphiodon by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Scapanorhynchus raphiodon by Thurmond and Jones (1981).
