Tropidopyge was named by Harrington and Kay (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Fran-u O Aren Sepkoski's reference number: 618]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Hypermecaspidinae by Fortey (1974); to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ceratopygidae by Jell and Adrain (2003).
