Volocephalina was named by Palmer and Halley (1979) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm lMid Sepkoski's reference number: 478 in Palmer and Halley 1979]. Its type is Volocephalina connexa.

It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Palmer and Halley (1979), Eddy and McCollum (1998) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Ptychopariidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
