Megapteritinae was named by Maa (1949). Its type is Megapterites.

It was reranked as the family Megapteritidae by Rasnitsyn (1968); it was synonymized subjectively with Myrmiciidae by Rasnitsyn (1969); it was synonymized subjectively with Pseudosiricidae by Carpenter (1992); it was synonymized subjectively with Formiciinae by Blank et al. (2009).

It was assigned to Symphyta by Rasnitsyn (1968); and to Siricidae by Maa (1949) and Schiff et al. (2012).
