Taxonomy
Balanophyllia variabilis was named by Nomland (1916). Its type specimen is UCMP 15384 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UCMP 714, Riggs Canyon, which is in a Bartonian marine horizon in the Tejon Formation of California.
