Ascetopeltis was named by Owens (1973) [Ascopeltis: Sepkoski's age data: O Ashg-l O Ashg-m Ascetopeltis: Sepkoski's age data: O Ashg-m O Ashg-m [378] Sepkoski's age data: O Ashg Sepkoski's reference number: 933]. Its type is Ascetopeltis bockeliei.

It was assigned to Proetinae by Owens (1973) and Owen (1981); to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Tropidocoryphidae by Parnäste et al. (2009); and to Trilobita by Sepkoski (2002) and Keulen and Rhebergen (2017).

R. M. Owens 1973Preglabellar field, when present, is very short (sag.); palpebral lobe large to rather small; occipital ring may or may not narrow abaxially; small, ill-defined lateral occipital lobes present; panderian notch present on cephalic doublure at base of genal spine; thorax of ten segments, preannulus present; pygidium broadly triangulate, without border; broad, bluntly ter­ minating axis with 4-5 rings, separated by very shallow interannular furrows; pleural areas with 3-4 pleural ribs, with pleural and interpleural furrows of about the same depth; sculpture smooth or striate, the striae aften inter­ spersed with sporadic granules.
