Hylobiidae was named by Kirby (1837). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Hylobiinae by Britton (1960); it was reranked as the tribe Hylobiini by Theobald (1937), Legalov (2011) and Bouchard et al. (2011).

It was assigned to Curculioninae by Theobald (1937); to Curculionidae by Britton (1960); and to Molytinae by Legalov (2011) and Bouchard et al. (2011).
