Aphryganoneura anomala was named by Tillyard (1926). Its type specimen is AM F28050, a wing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Belmont (Mitchell 1924 coll), which is in a Changhsingian pond chert in the Croudace Bay Formation of Australia.
